Background knowledge

Our knowledge repository is an extract of our view of humans and the world, which view serves also as the base of our mission.

The basis of the programs of Manas Festival are these three mutually supporting phenomena:

In Western civilization throughout our growth our body-consciousness deteriorates in favor of the rational mind and of processing visual stimuli.

By its design the current educational system also places emphasis on the development of cognitive function. As a result, other territories of our cognitive capacity remains unused.

It causes additional difficulty that modern science considers the mind to be the result only of the brain and not the entire body, as opposed to the oriental image of a human, where the previously described intellect is called Buddhiand the intelligence residing in body memory is called manas.

Reason:

The ability of our mind for logical thinking on the chain of the causal link. This is called linear thinking or cleverness.

Manas:

A deep intelligence or wisdom that builds up from the body-consciousness and cellular memory which operates as a sixth sense in bridging the rational mind functions and the flow state. In Western culture it is known as the capacity of intuition.

Manas festival - Tudástár

These are the two foundation stones of our decision making ability. When used in a balanced manner, they enter in mutual cooperation and create a unified consciousness.

Our life fundamentally is a series of decisions, including the choice of „not making decision”. In Western culture the process of decision making is considered exclusively a rational cognitive function. However, we may run into numerous situation in which the rational mind supports equally each potential result of the decision making. We call this a dilemma.

In certain situations all we need is a quick decision making because there is no time for thinking it through rationally. This is when we receive support from our intuition, that is backed by a well-functioning body-consciousness, (manas).

Many experience that their rational thinking is rather overwhelmed by their complexes, and the arc of logic is damaged. Therefore they can make more exact and authentic decisions when listening to their body-consciousness called manas.

Our decision making ability

Psychology made scientific experiments about the human decision making process and they found that the decision making strategy in our everydays is to rationalize or streamline things rather than making rational decisions. This means that first we tend to make a decision based on our emotions, and only after this does our mind start rational work in order to justify our emotion-based decision. Therefore the rational work of our mind activates only after the decision making process has taken place.

These two separate but mutually cooperating parts can be observed both in the mind and the biology of humans. We can find the IQ-EQ pair in the human psyche, the left and right side of the brain in human biology, or the parasymphathetic and sympathetic nervous system.

Human consciousness keeps developing and gaining ever more wisdom throughout a lifetime. This process can often derail and lead to difficulties in our everydays. Transformational or psychedelic festivals often place serious challenges in front of the way we live our everyday life. Participating in such festivals can bring both personal gains and hardships. The goal of Manas festival is to provide support on the practical level and to explain the theory in order to overcome these hardships. To introduce the elements of this mission we start with the psychological image of man.

Personality:

The ’self’ that functions in the everyday. The result of our life experience and abilities interveawing with each other. Personality shows a gradual, staged development in several different accepted psychological models. These developmental levels define fundamentally what we are capable of creating and experiencing in the everyday.

On the stages of our development it is inevitable to meet with challenges. These „developmental pains” are called normative crisis, such as teen-age.

This developmental process builds up from the stages on each level:

identifying with something, differentiating from it, integrating it

Manas festival

In adulthood the developmental process leading to the next level often takes place through experiencing the flow state of mind or a peak experience. When this happens we can leave the perspective of our actual state of consciousness for a short period of time and take an insight into the possibilities of the next level of our self development. After the first few peak experience it is almost natural that we sink back into our everyday habits and predetermined trajectory However, our perspective has already gone through an expansion and nothing feels the same anymore.

As a result the development of our consciousnessmay speed up, that may be accompanied by an intensifying pain pressure (normative crisis). időszakával járhat, ezeket nevezzük normatív kríziseknek. Ebből sokszor újabb csúcsélmények segítségével tisztul ki a kép, hogy eljött a változás ideje, mert aktuális tudatszintünk nem kielégítő többé.

For the changes to get stable in most cases we need to face the content of our complexes that are pushed down into our subconscious mind. The second step is to accept the feelings that come with it then our complexes can transform. Often times it leads to the understanding of our own behaviour and the letting go of our predetermined trajectory (integration). This mental development always occurs in synchronicity with the release of tension in our body and yields an energetically more flexible and permeable functioning of the body and the soul.

When we suffer a trauma in any of the stages, it gets imprinted as a trauma into our body (manas) through the cellular memory, it becomes a complex in our subconscious mind and will afterwards define our behaviour and hinder the process of our development.

Complexes:

The summation of the tension in the body and the soul that blocks the free flow of energy and smothers the vibration of the body. This is the hard drive disc on which the program of the ego runs.

The expression of complex was created by C.G. Jung. It is the result of the consequence of dissonance due to unresolved inner and external conflicts, and it consists of contents of the soul that are incompatible with the mind. These contents of the soul have a powerful emotional charge; they disturb the normal energy flow of the human psyche, causing a continuous energy consumption. In short: complex is all unresolved unconscious emotional charge.

There are many theories to explain the origin of our complexes. Most widely known are the trauma theory, the karma and the transgeneration.

Trauma theory:

MANAS interpretaion: unresolved emotional content. Predetermined trajectory.

Typical for the personality of childhood era (however, sometimes for adulthood as well) which, in order to avoid being overwhelmed by it and to preserve the function of the personality, hides this experience into the unconscious.

Transgeneration theory:

MANAS interpretaion: genetically inherited content.

As per the concept of Transgeneration our challenges today originate from the family of our bloodline going back as far as seven generations. There are theories that consider our transgenerational content as genetical heritage. They approach the human genome as not an unmodifiable material constraint, but as a phenomenon rewritable by the human mind.

Karma theory:

According to the oriental concept of karma the cause of our current challanges are the patterns brought over from our past lives. Therefore in the background of our complexes there are memories originating also outside of our current life.

Manas festival

It is important to differentiate our hardships which originate from our complexes from the ones stem from the natural challenges of our development.

Normative crisis:

Various types of suffering that inevitably accompany the growth of a human being. These are separation anxiety, terrible two, reaching school age, teen age, midlife crises.

Separation anxiety when experienced in a healthy way is the foundation of secure bonding. A child around age 1 realizes their being small and exposed. So far they let anyone to lift them up but from now they insist to their usual caregiver and becomes distrustful with strangers.

Terrible two when experienced in a healthy way is the foundation of willpower. A child at the age of 2-3 comes to the realization that their will and feelings are not always in line with that of the outside world. Therefore the child tries to force their will on their environment at all cost, even if having to lie on the floor screaming

Reaching school age when experienced in a healthy way is the foundation of the ability for cooperation. A child of age 6-7 experiences and recognizes the feelings of others and finds themselves with the challenges of socialization. It is the harmonization of different interests that causes the hardships.

Teen age when experienced in a healthy way is the foundation of independent identity. Above age 12 the youngster starts to question the world that so far has been accepted without thinking. This is a rebellious age against the caregivers and other definitive structures (school, workplace).

Middle life crises when experienced in a healthy way is the precondition of serenity without reason.

Adult societies typically regard the reaching of previously set goals as the highest level of happiness one can attain. In an ideal case after our success we can experience a happy ecstasy, and when it fades away we can raise the stakes and start the process from the beginning after setting a new goal. For an overwhelming majority of developed societies this is the final stage of development.

However, more and more people find it unsatisfactory and recognize that a life oriented only towards success but in lack of flow state of mind is fighting windmills. At this time one may start desperately seeking the meaning of life and might even experience a deepening demotivation and depression.

The challenge here is to arrive from the modus operandi of focusing on the goals to the present moment and to the existence beyond goals, where life does not have to have meaning and goal, where life is simply good.

The mission of Manas Festival with all its programs is designed to support visitors experience and keeping serenity. For this we need to establish relationship with our superior self.

Manas festival

The developmental opportunities of our mind do not stop at the stage of well operating adulthood in society. This inner potential is accessible for everyone. We can connect with it through peak experiences and flow state of mind.

Superior self:

Our modus operandi that integrates our experiences beyond the boundaries of our personality. The developmental opportunities of our mind do not stop at the stage of well operating adulthood in society. This inner potential is accessible for everyone. We can connect with it through peak experiences and flow state of mind.

It is known by different names: ”inner god”, ”self”, ”higher self”. Integral psychology thinks about it as transpersonal ability.

A wise inner compass pointing us towards the exact path that best serves our development. It is the source of our inner voice and intuition.

Flow:

A relaxed unity of body-consciousness and feeling can react flexibly to the impulses from the outer world.

The melting together of act and mind: in the flow state of mind the very thing we are busy with at the moment grips us so intense that we almost become one with our body movements. Int the flow state our complexesfade out. Depression and negative thoughts disappear, giving us great strength. After the flow experience one feels much stronger and has a much more positive attitude than beforehand. It is especially of healing nature.

Intuition:

An anticipation of our body (our manas) and our mind about a certain phenomenon. Having an advanced body-consciousness enables the various frequencies of the world, people, bodies and thoughts in our surroundings to freely circulate through our manas, which is able to decipher for us the information carried by the vibration either in form of a sensation in our body or an impression, in other words in form of an intuition.

Exact:

The least painful developmental curve.

The path from point A to point B with the least amount of pain pressure. The main task of the superior self is to keep us on the exact path, In the case of ego hyperfunction resulting from our complexes we take a detour and move along an inexact path. In reality our itinerary is the result of the two modi operandi dancing together.

Peak experience:

A short experience of existence at more developed levels of consciousness. An experience in which ”limitless horizons open up to the vision” followed by ”ecstasy, surprise and awe”. Before psychology came to life, peak experience was often called mystic experience.

Manas festival - Tudástár
Manas festival

According to Maslow (the first transpersonal psychologyst) the peak experience and the flow experience merge together.

Transpersonal levels of consciousness:
motivations, experiences and consequences that link to the universal state of being and exceed our personal world.

Maslow used peak experience as an expression to refer to the moments of self-realization.

When the peak experience takes place it feels like we become connected with the elements of our surroundings. Colours and sounds feel more vivid – sensations are clearer and sharper.

Peak experiences may occur in passive ways, too, but they mostly happen, when we deeply immerse in a certain action. When one goes through a peak experience one usually becomes so engrossed in the activity that the person and the activity become a unity, the activity ”becomes” the person.

Hinduism calls this concept dharma and considers it as the order of nature, as a divine plan. This divine developmental curve might even run through multiple lives before reaching the very same place. In this world view karma is also a commonly known concept, where the consequences of our deeds in our previous life have an impact on us. Compared to this, dharma is an inner system of responsibility where there is no need for outer consequences.

The western world thinks of this as morality.

Hindu culture has created a particularly detailed set of concepts about the transzcendens, szakrális világról.

Chitta – kozmikus tudat, egyetemes lét, a magasrendű én-nel való kapcsolatképesség

Hindu culture has created a particularly detailed set of concepts about the transcendent and sacral world.

It is not easy to translate these concepts with the terminology that exists in the Western materialistic culture. Nevertheless, we gave it a try.

Hinduism and yoga interprets the mind in four categories:

Buddhi – the intellect that culminates in the brain

Manas – the deep memory of the body and the intuitive wisdom living in it

Ahankara – personality, identity

Chitta – cosmic mind, universal existence, the ability to make contact with the superior self

Manas festival - Tudástár

A személyiséget definiálhatjuk úgy, hogy a külvilágtól önmagát elhatárolni képes sokoldalú egység, amelyre jellemző a sokféleség organizációja, egységbefoglalása. A pszichológia énfejlődés modelljében (Jane Loevinger) a személyiség lépcsőzetesen fejlődik.

A fejlődés első szakasza tudatszintünk alapvetéseinek megkérdőjelezésével kezdődik.

A manas festival missziója minden programjával támogatni a tánctéren megélt peak experience. és flow state of mind állapot integrálását.

Manas festival

Personality can be defined as a versatile unit capable of delimiting itself from the outer world, with a special capacity to organize and integrate diversity.

In Jane Loevinger’s theory of ego development the personality develops in a gradual fashion. Great psychologists consider the development of the human being as a gradual one. Sigmund Freud explains that the sexual development of a human being is gradual, Erik Ericson shares the same approach about social, Jean Piaget about cognitive and Lawrence Kohlberg about moral development. It was Ken Wilber who integrated the manscape of oriental and occidental philosophy and psychology on the nine levels of the development of consciousness. In his integral psychology model every person starts climbing this ladder in their childhood and does their best to reach as high as possible, motivated by the involuntary driving force of the development of consciousness.

The first period of the development starts with questioning the fundamental beliefs of the current level of our consciousness. The next period is about jumping up and down between the current and the consecutive level of consciousness. Our peak experiences usually make us hop up, then a certain trigger point in our subconscious mind activates our complexes (our ego starts overfunctioning) and thus we may fall back.

At times of such jumps it is common for one to identify themselves fully with the new level. In retrospect all the levels beneath seem an illusion. Over time we understand that the levels of consciousness build upon each other and that they are more and more authentic experiences of being (differentiation), and not realities that can be segregated from one another, therefore they are necessary steps for all or us in the process of personal development (integration).

The mission of MANAS Festival with all its programs is to support the integration of the peak experience and the flow state one goes through on the dancefloor.

Manas festival - Tudástár

A fejlődés irányába mutató belső nyomás, változási motiváció. Komplexusaink méretével egyenesen arányosan növekszik a fejlődésünkhöz szükséges kínnyomás.

Manas festival

Pain pressure: the inner pressure and motivation for change that point towards development. The intensity of the pain pressure required to push us forward on our development path increases in a linear fashion with the magnitude of our complexes.
